JSON Key Sorter

Sort JSON object keys alphabetically (A→Z or Z→A), with deep sort support. Free, and it runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded.

How to use the JSON Key Sorter

1. Paste any JSON object into the left panel.

2. Choose A→Z or Z→A sort order, and toggle Deep Sort to also sort nested object keys.

3. The sorted JSON appears on the right — click Copy to save it.

What is it?

Sorting JSON keys alphabetically is useful for making large configuration objects easier to scan, producing consistent diffs in version control (where key order changes create noise), and matching API contracts that expect alphabetically ordered fields. It also helps during debugging when you need to quickly find a specific key in a complex nested object.

Deep sort recursively sorts keys at every nesting level, so nested objects like address, metadata, or config blocks also have their keys sorted. Shallow sort only sorts the top-level keys, leaving nested objects as-is.

Example

JSON with unsorted keys
{"zebra":1,"apple":2,"mango":3}
↓
Keys sorted A → Z
{
  "apple": 2,
  "mango": 3,
  "zebra": 1
}

Sorted keys make JSON diffs cleaner in version control and large configs easier to scan.

Benefits

Normalise key order for deterministic JSON diffing

Alphabetically sorted keys mean JSON diffs show only value changes — not key reordering that hides real differences.

Make large JSON configs easier to navigate

Alphabetical key order makes finding a specific setting predictable in any JSON object, regardless of how it was originally written.

Produce canonical JSON for consistent hashing and signatures

Sorted key order ensures the same logical object always serializes to the same string — required for reproducible hashes and signatures.

Enforce consistent key ordering in API documentation examples

Sorted JSON in API docs, READMEs, and changelog entries is easier to read and compare across versions.

Frequently asked questions

Does key order matter in JSON?

According to the JSON specification, object key order is not guaranteed and should not be relied upon. However, most parsers preserve insertion order, and sorted keys make diffs cleaner, objects easier to scan, and serialized output deterministic.

What is the difference between shallow and deep sort?

Shallow sort only sorts the top-level keys of the JSON object. Deep sort recursively sorts keys at every nesting level, including nested objects inside arrays. Enable deep sort when working with complex, multi-level JSON structures.

Can I sort an array of objects?

JSON Sorter sorts object keys alphabetically, not array elements. To sort an array of objects by a key value, use the JSON Array Sorter tool instead.
