How to use the CSV to XML
1. Paste your CSV data (with a header row) into the left panel.
2. Optionally customize the root element tag and row element tag names.
3. The generated XML appears instantly on the right — click Copy to save it.
What is it?
CSV (Comma-Separated Values) and XML are both used to represent tabular or structured data, but XML is more verbose and supports hierarchical structures. Converting CSV to XML is useful when integrating with legacy systems, generating SOAP payloads, or exporting data to tools that require XML format.
The first row of the CSV is treated as column headers, which become the child element tag names. Each subsequent row becomes a record element. Special characters in column names are sanitized to ensure valid XML tag names.
Example
name,age,city Alice,30,New York Bob,25,London
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<data>
<record>
<name>Alice</name>
<age>30</age>
<city>New York</city>
</record>
<record>
<name>Bob</name>
<age>25</age>
<city>London</city>
</record>
</data>Column headers become XML element names. Use the Root/Row fields to customize the wrapping element names.
Benefits
Feed spreadsheet data into XML-based enterprise systems
Legacy enterprise platforms, SOAP services, and EDI systems require XML — convert CSV exports directly to the required format.
Convert flat CSV data to hierarchical XML with custom structure
Define element nesting to match the XML schema your receiving system expects — not just a flat element-per-column output.
Transform CRM and ERP export CSVs to XML for integration
Salesforce, SAP, and Oracle integrations commonly require XML-formatted data — convert CSV exports without a middleware layer.
Generate XML test fixtures from simple CSV data
Write test data in a spreadsheet, convert to XML for tests that require XML input without maintaining two data sources.
Frequently asked questions
What if my CSV has commas inside values?
Values containing commas should be wrapped in double quotes in the CSV (e.g., "New York, NY"). The basic parser used here splits on commas — for complex CSVs with quoted fields, use the CSV to JSON tool which handles quotes properly.
Can I customise the XML tag names?
Yes — the Root tag field controls the outermost element and Row tag controls each record element. Column headers from your CSV automatically become child element names.
Why are spaces in column headers replaced with underscores?
XML tag names cannot contain spaces. Spaces in CSV headers are automatically replaced with underscores to create valid XML element names.
