PKI (Public Key Infrastructure)
Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is the system of certificate authorities, digital certificates and policies that lets people trust that a public key really belongs to a website, person or organisation.
In public key (asymmetric) cryptography each party has a key pair: a public key shared with everyone and a private key kept secret. A certificate authority (CA), such as Let's Encrypt or DigiCert, verifies the owner and signs a certificate binding their name to the public key. Browsers trust a set of root CAs, so they can check a site's HTTPS certificate through a chain of signatures.
