End-to-End Encryption (E2EE)
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) encrypts a message on the sender's device so that only the intended recipient's device can decrypt it. Servers that pass the message along, including the service provider's own, see only scrambled data.
This differs from encryption in transit (such as HTTPS), where data is protected on the way but decrypted on the server. WhatsApp, Signal and iMessage use end-to-end encryption, commonly based on the Signal Protocol. It protects content, but not necessarily metadata such as who talked to whom and when.
