Web Server

A web server is software (and the computer running it) that receives HTTP requests from browsers and other clients and sends back responses such as web pages, images, files or API data.

A web server can serve static files directly or pass requests to an application (written in PHP, Node.js, Python, Java and so on) that builds the response. Popular web servers include Apache, Nginx, Microsoft IIS and LiteSpeed; they also handle HTTPS, compression, caching and routing requests to the right site.
