CDN (Content Delivery Network)
A CDN (Content Delivery Network) is a network of servers spread across many cities and countries that store copies (caches) of a website's files, such as images, CSS, JavaScript and videos. When a user visits the site, the files are served from the server nearest to them instead of from the website's single origin server.
Serving content from nearby makes pages load faster, reduces the load on the origin server and keeps the site available during traffic spikes. Many CDNs also protect against DDoS attacks and provide free SSL certificates. Cloudflare, Akamai, Amazon CloudFront and Fastly are well-known CDNs.
