Whitespace Remover

Remove extra spaces, trim lines, strip blank lines, or eliminate all whitespace. Free, and it runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded.

How to use the Whitespace Remover

1. Paste your text into the left panel.

2. Choose the whitespace removal mode: collapse spaces, trim lines, remove blank lines, or strip all whitespace.

3. The cleaned text appears on the right — click Copy to save it.

What is it?

Unwanted whitespace is one of the most common text quality issues — extra spaces from copy-pasting, inconsistent indentation, blank lines between paragraphs, or trailing spaces that cause issues in CSV files and code. This tool provides four targeted modes to handle different whitespace problems without disturbing the characters you want to keep.

Collapse mode is the most commonly used: it trims each line and collapses any sequence of spaces into a single space. Trim mode only removes leading and trailing spaces from each line. Blank Lines mode removes empty lines without touching the content. Remove All is aggressive — it strips every whitespace character including tabs and newlines, useful for creating compact strings.

Benefits

Trim leading and trailing spaces before database storage

Untrimmed strings cause equality check failures, sorting inconsistencies, and subtle bugs when comparing user input to stored values.

Remove non-breaking spaces from pasted web content

characters from HTML copy as invisible non-breaking spaces (U+00A0) that break string comparisons and CSV parsing.

Strip blank lines from configuration files and lists

Unintentional empty lines in config files, .gitignore entries, and text lists are often silently misinterpreted or cause parse errors.

Normalise whitespace before string comparison or hashing

Inconsistent spacing makes identical logical strings appear different — normalise first to ensure reliable comparison and deduplication.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between collapse and trim?

Trim only removes whitespace from the start and end of each line, leaving internal spacing untouched. Collapse goes further: it trims AND replaces any sequence of 2+ spaces inside a line with a single space. Use collapse when text has been copy-pasted from a PDF or web page with inconsistent spacing.

Does Remove All delete newlines too?

Yes — Remove All strips every whitespace character including spaces, tabs, newlines, and carriage returns. The output is a single continuous string with no breaks. This is useful for compact string comparison or generating minified values, but will make the text unreadable for humans.

What counts as a blank line?

A blank line is any line that contains no characters, or only whitespace characters (spaces, tabs). The Remove Blank Lines mode filters these out while keeping lines that have at least one non-whitespace character.
