Random Color Generator

Generate random HEX, RGB, and HSL colors in bulk. Free, and it runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded.

How to use the Random Color Generator

1. Set the number of colors you want to generate (1–20).

2. Click Generate Colors to create a random palette.

3. Click any color swatch or hex code to copy it. Click Generate again for a fresh set.

What is it?

Random color generation is useful for prototyping, inspiration, placeholder colors in mockups, generating test data with visual variety, and creating ad-hoc palettes for projects. Each color is generated with full RGB range and shown with its hex, RGB, and HSL representations.

Unlike the Color Palette Generator (which derives harmonious colors from a base), the Random Color Generator produces completely independent colors with no relationship to each other. This is useful for maximum variety — for example, assigning distinct colors to chart series, user avatars, or category labels.

Example

Click Generate (5 colors)
Count: 5 · Mode: Random
↓
Sample Random Colors
#e74c3c rgb(231,76,60) hsl(6,78%,57%)
#2ecc71 rgb(46,204,113) hsl(146,63%,49%)
#3498db rgb(52,152,219) hsl(204,70%,53%)
#9b59b6 rgb(155,89,182) hsl(283,39%,53%)
#f1c40f rgb(241,196,15) hsl(48,89%,50%)

Each click generates a completely new set. Click the color swatch to copy HEX, RGB, or HSL format.

Benefits

Generate distinguishable colors for data visualization series

Unique random colors for chart lines, bar segments, map regions, and legend entries — generated in bulk without repetition.

Simulate color variety in UI prototypes before real colors are defined

Populate color pickers, avatar backgrounds, and tag labels with varied colors to reveal layout and contrast issues early.

Assign unique background colors to placeholder avatars

Random colors for user initials and avatar backgrounds ensure visual distinction between users before profile images are set.

Bulk-generate color sets for testing color pickers and palette UIs

Produce many unique colors to stress-test color selection interfaces and palette management components.

Frequently asked questions

Are the colors truly random?

The colors use JavaScript's Math.random() which is pseudo-random — each click produces a statistically independent set of colors. They're not cryptographically random, but are more than random enough for design and UI purposes.

What do hex, RGB, and HSL mean?

Hex (#rrggbb) is the most common web format. RGB (rgb(r,g,b)) represents red/green/blue channels 0–255. HSL (hsl(h,s%,l%)) represents hue (0°–360°), saturation, and lightness — easier to reason about for designers. All three represent the same color, just in different notations.

Can I generate pastel or dark colors only?

The current generator produces colors across the full lightness range. For specific ranges (pastels = high lightness, dark = low lightness), use the Color Palette Generator with a specific base color and the Shades mode.
