Date Difference

Calculate the exact difference between two dates. Free, and it runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded.

How to use the Date Difference

1. Select or type the two dates you want to compare.

2. The exact difference is shown in multiple units: days, weeks, months, years, hours, and minutes.

3. The order of dates doesn't matter — the tool always shows a positive difference.

What is it?

Calculating the difference between two dates is a common task in project management, finance, scheduling, and data analysis. The simple subtraction of milliseconds gives the exact difference, which is then converted to human-readable units.

Note that "months" is an approximate calculation because months have different lengths (28–31 days). This tool shows months as the total number of calendar months elapsed between the two dates. For contract and billing calculations, working in days is more precise.

Example

From: Jan 1, 2024 → To: Dec 31, 2024
Start: 2024-01-01 · End: 2024-12-31
↓
Date Difference
Days: 365 (2024 is a leap year)
Weeks: 52 weeks, 1 day
Months: 11 months, 30 days
Hours: 8,760

Useful for contract periods, subscription durations, or calculating age from a birthdate.

Benefits

Calculate exact project durations and deadline intervals

Precise day counts eliminate off-by-one errors in project planning, contract calculations, and SLA measurement.

Compute employee tenure, subscription lengths, and billing periods

Exact date differences are required for HR systems, SaaS billing cycles, and compliance record keeping.

Handle month-length and leap year variations automatically

Manual date subtraction is error-prone across month boundaries and leap years — this tool handles all calendar arithmetic correctly.

Verify date calculation logic in your application

Compute the expected difference here and compare against your code's output to catch off-by-one day bugs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the month count approximate?

Months vary from 28 to 31 days. The tool counts calendar months (how many month boundaries are crossed), which is the most intuitive interpretation for most use cases.

Does this include or exclude the end date?

The difference is calculated as the number of complete days between the two dates, exclusive of the start date. For example, Jan 1 to Jan 2 = 1 day.
