DBMS (Database Management System)

A DBMS (Database Management System) is software that stores, organises and manages data in a database and lets users and programs create, read, update and delete that data. It sits between the data and the applications that use it.

A DBMS handles storage, querying, security and access control, backup and recovery, and keeps data consistent when many users work at the same time. Examples include MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, SQLite and MongoDB.
