SSD vs HDD
An HDD (Hard Disk Drive) stores data magnetically on spinning platters read by a moving head, while an SSD (Solid State Drive) stores data in flash memory chips with no moving parts. Both are non-volatile storage that keeps data when the power is off.
SSDs are much faster (especially NVMe SSDs), quieter, use less power and are more resistant to drops, so computers start and open programs quickly. HDDs are cheaper per gigabyte and are still used where large capacity matters more than speed, such as backups and archives.
