Booting (Boot Process)

Booting is the sequence a computer follows from being switched on until the operating system is ready to use. The firmware (BIOS or UEFI) runs a power-on self-test (POST) to check the hardware, finds a bootable drive, and starts the bootloader, which loads the operating system kernel into memory.

A cold boot starts from power off; a warm boot (restart) reloads the operating system without cutting power. Fast startup features and SSDs make modern boots take only seconds.
