RAM (Random Access Memory)
RAM (Random Access Memory) is the main working memory of a computer. It holds the operating system, running programs and the data they are currently using, so the CPU can read and write it quickly. Any location can be accessed directly in about the same time, which is why it is called "random access".
RAM is volatile: its contents are lost when the power is switched off, which is why work must be saved to storage such as an SSD or hard disk. More RAM lets a computer keep more programs and data in fast memory at once; common types are DDR4 and DDR5 for desktops and LPDDR for phones and laptops.
