Operating System

An operating system (OS) is the system software that manages a computer's hardware and provides services to programs. It sits between applications and the hardware, so programs do not have to control the processor, memory and devices directly.

Its main jobs are process management (running programs and sharing the CPU), memory management, file management, device management through drivers, security and the user interface. Common operating systems are Windows, macOS and Linux on computers, and Android and iOS on phones.
