How to use the .env File Generator
1. Add your environment variable keys, values, and optional comments.
2. The .env file content is generated automatically on the right.
3. Copy the output and save it as your .env file. Never commit .env to Git!
What is it?
.env files store environment-specific configuration: database URLs, API keys, ports, and feature flags. They allow the same codebase to behave differently in development, staging, and production without changing code.
The dotenv package (Node.js), python-dotenv (Python), and Vite's built-in .env support all read these files and inject variables into the process environment. Always add .env to .gitignore — committing secrets to Git is a critical security vulnerability. Use .env.example with placeholder values to document required variables.
Example
Database URL, API key, port, debug mode, JWT secret
# Database DATABASE_URL=postgresql://user:pass@localhost:5432/mydb # API APIKEY=sk-abc123... PORT=3000 # Auth DEBUG=false JWT_SECRET=your-secret-here
Never commit .env to Git. Add it to .gitignore and create .env.example with placeholder values for docs.
Benefits
Build .env files visually instead of editing raw text
Add, rename, reorder, and group variables with a structured editor — no manual whitespace management or newline errors.
Generate .env.example templates for new contributors
Produce a template with all required keys and placeholder values so new team members know exactly what to fill in.
Validate key naming conventions before adding to production
Consistent SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE naming prevents environment variable lookup failures in Node.js, Python, and Bash.
Export a complete .env file for deployment or secrets manager import
Copy the generated output directly into your deployment environment, Doppler, AWS Secrets Manager, or Vault.
Frequently asked questions
Should I commit .env to Git?
Never. .env files contain secrets (API keys, passwords, connection strings) that must not be public. Add .env to .gitignore and create .env.example with placeholder values for documentation.
How do I use .env in Node.js?
Install dotenv: npm install dotenv. Then add require('dotenv').config() at the top of your entry file. In Vite/Next.js, .env files are loaded automatically.
