CSS Beautifier

Beautify and format minified CSS code with proper indentation. Free, and it runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded.

How to use the CSS Beautifier

1. Paste minified or poorly formatted CSS into the left panel.

2. The beautified CSS with proper indentation and line breaks appears instantly on the right.

3. Click Copy to save the formatted CSS to your clipboard.

What is it?

CSS beautification (also called pretty-printing or formatting) takes minified or compressed CSS and adds proper indentation, line breaks, and spacing to make it human-readable. Minified CSS is optimized for transfer speed but impossible to read or debug. Beautifying it is essential when inspecting third-party stylesheets, debugging build output, or reviewing generated CSS from preprocessors.

This tool uses the same js-beautify library used by VS Code and many popular code editors, so the output follows standard CSS formatting conventions. Each selector rule and property gets its own line, making it easy to scan and modify.

Example

Minified CSS
body{margin:0;padding:0;font-family:sans-serif;}h1{color:#333;font-size:2rem;}a{color:blue;text-decoration:none;}
↓
Beautified CSS
body {
  margin: 0;
  padding: 0;
  font-family: sans-serif;
}

h1 {
  color: #333;
  font-size: 2rem;
}

a {
  color: blue;
  text-decoration: none;
}

Beautification is purely cosmetic — the browser renders beautified and minified CSS identically.

Benefits

Read and edit minified third-party stylesheets

Vendor CSS is often shipped minified; beautify to understand existing rules before writing overrides or debugging conflicts.

Recover readable CSS from build output

Inspect compressed or generated stylesheets from any build tool by beautifying them to their original readable form.

Understand specificity before overriding

Formatted CSS makes selector chains and declaration blocks clear — essential before writing override rules that need to be more specific.

Paste into documentation with consistent formatting

Beautified CSS pastes cleanly into style guides, READMEs, and design system documentation without mixed indentation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between beautify and minify?

Beautify adds whitespace, indentation, and line breaks to make code human-readable — increases file size. Minify removes all unnecessary whitespace and shortens names to reduce file size for production. You beautify to read/debug, and minify before deploying.

Does beautifying CSS change how it behaves?

No — CSS beautification is purely cosmetic. Adding or removing whitespace and newlines has no effect on how browsers interpret CSS rules. The styled output is functionally identical to the minified input.

Can I use this on SCSS or Less?

The CSS beautifier handles standard CSS syntax. SCSS and Less have mostly compatible syntax for properties and selectors, but nesting, variables, and mixins may not format perfectly. For preprocessor files, use a dedicated formatter (Prettier with the SCSS plugin).
