How the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana works
SSY is a government small savings scheme for a girl child under 10. You deposit ₹250 to ₹1.5 lakh a year for the first 15 years. After that no deposits are needed, and the balance keeps earning interest until the account matures 21 years after opening. Interest is compounded yearly at the rate the government sets each quarter, currently 8.2%.
Withdrawals
Once she turns 18, or passes Class 10, you can withdraw up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year for higher education. The account can also be closed early for her marriage after she turns 18.
Tax benefits (EEE)
Under the old tax regime, deposits count toward the ₹1.5 lakh Section 80C limit. The interest and the maturity amount are tax-free under both regimes, so SSY is one of the highest-yielding guaranteed options for a daughter's education or marriage.
