How RD interest is calculated
You pay a fixed amount every month, and banks compound the interest quarterly. Each instalment earns interest only for the months it stays in the account. The first instalment earns for the full tenure, the last for one month. This calculator adds up every instalment's value at maturity: Σ R × (1 + r/4)months left / 3. That matches the standard bank formula M = R × [(1 + i)n − 1] / [1 − (1 + i)−1/3] with i = r/400.
RD interest is taxable at your slab rate, and banks deduct TDS once it crosses the yearly threshold, the same as for FDs. Missing an instalment usually costs a small penalty, so pick a monthly amount you can keep up.
