Why calculate this way around?
Most EMI calculators ask for a loan amount and tell you the EMI. But when you’re planning a purchase — a car, a home, an education loan — you usually know your budget for the monthly payment first, and the loan amount is what you’re trying to discover. This calculator inverts the standard formula to answer that question directly: given an EMI you’re comfortable paying, at a given rate and tenure, how much can you actually borrow?
Common mistakes
- Budgeting the EMI at the edge of affordability. Banks typically want your total EMIs (including this new one) to stay under 40-50% of your monthly income — leave room, since rates on floating loans can rise.
- Forgetting the loan-to-value cap. For secured loans like home or car loans, banks also cap the loan at a percentage of the asset value (commonly 75-90%) — the EMI-based figure here is the affordability ceiling, not a guarantee the bank will lend that much.
